+ Hi. I have a big problem with 386MAX V6.01. Well when I have installed
+ the memory manager and boots my computer it wont work. It just reboots
+ my computer as soon it reads the config.sys file:
+
+ device=c:\386max\386max.sys pro=c:\386max\36max.pro <-- reboots right
+ here!
This is too easy ... check your spelling. For the "*.pro" you
have "=c:\386max\36max.pro". Don't you want "=c:\386max\386max.pro"?

Hello all!
I have only one way to use the memory over the 640 kb. It's
loading a ems driver that allow me to use the 384 kb as expanded memory
(also known as lotus/intel/memory). I only can acces it using cache.
The question is the following: Can i use any kinda himem driver on my
computer so i can devicehigh or so? is there any soft package to help
me? I heard on a list someone using the himem driver ... it doesn't
function on me ...
Thanx in advance..

Hello, everyone. Here is Korea.
I am wondering why the discussion about MS-DOS 6.0 didn't exist in
info-ibmpc. The sale of MS-DOS 6.0 is only in Korea?
I've heard that MS-DOS 6.0 includes some utilities from Centeral Point
Inc. and Symentic Inc. ( Is the campany name correct?)
However, I want to know more information about MS-DOS 6.0 .

Subject: COM4-COM8 support under DOS
I am curious to know if any users out there have succeeded in providing
COM port support for PC compatibles to the extent that the PS/2 series
offers. Most reference books I have consulted state that DOS cannot
support any more than four serial ports, even if it is running on PS/2
hardware. Yet I have seen advertisements from vendors like Arnet which
offer 8-port solutions, perhaps even more, in a single ISA machine.
Is it true that such a board could submit calls for all eight ports
using one interrupt channel, like the PS/2? Would special drivers be
needed? Could a user dial in on one line and use a device on another
without crashing the system?
Any information or suggestions about other forums would be much
appreciated.

Subject: dos 5 dosshell and speech incompatible
I use a speech synthesizer to run computers i use. I tried running
dosshell and found:
1) it doesn't talk after the copyright message,
2) it intercepts critical keys needed to find out what's going on with
the screen,
3) it's similar to msd in that behavior.
I wish microsoft would put a message up that talks on their software
where applicable that says not compatible with speech synthesizers
please hit escape now to return to dos or any other key to continue. I
know, I know they'll have to do that with all their products some day
and won't be able to rip our community off anymore.

I'm a little confused by this approach. If you have enough RAM to put
your swap file in a RAM drive, why create a swap file?
Anyhow, I don't know if you can put the swap file on a RAM disk, but I
do know that you can't compress the drive you have your swap file on.

MS put the compression back in for the actual release, of course. Has
anyone found a use for DOS 6, anyway? (Keep in mind I have Stacker, PC
Tools, Norton, and QEMM-- I mean a use the base operating system

I must be lonely, I'm answering my own mail again ...
My previous note should have pointed this is true on ISA bus machines.
I believe MCA machines may be able to share IRQ's, and I know about as
much about EISA machines as I do about X.400, which is too say not
much.

Ah, I hate to mention this, but the manual has all this
information. Some machines have accounts available and must be used,
others don't. I presume you were brave enough to carry on regardless
and achieve a successful login.
The manual is the book "Using MS-DOS Kermit", by Christine
Gianone, 2nd edition, Digital Press and Prentice Hall. Current MS-DOS
Kermit is v3.12. Joe Doupnik

Subject: 486 DX33 -- Is it really fast?
Dear netter:
I just bought a 486 DX33 MHz with a VESA Local bus motherboard. In
order to increase its speed I add 32 bit IDE controller and 32 bit
video card and 8 MB RAM and 256 Cache. But after I use Qaplus and
Norton System information ( si.exe ) to test. I was very surprised to
find that the average speed of my hard drive ( Maxtor 207MB ) is about
14 ms. And according to the Norton sireport ( produced by si.exe ),
it is slower than that of 386 33Mhz Compaq. And I asked its company
and got the answer that this speed is very fast.
My question is is it true, that this hard drive is good. Is there a
way to increase the computer speed more? How can I use software to
increase its speed and to optimize its working process?
Thank you very much for your help in advance.

Yes, the Creative Labs people have completely overlooked the market for
cheap digital TV editing. I was rather upset about that one as well.
I do music videos for an avante guard rock band ("Odor of Pears" --
blatant plug) and alot of live video projections during our
performances. I need NTSC output.

Yes, but I can't get my motherboard to support the 16-bit 44KHz in
stereo. It looks like I'm going to have to replace the motherboard to
make it work.

Well, we are pushing the bleeding edge. There are hardware packages
that do NTSC digitization, genlock (for overlays), and NTSC output,
however, they are in the $2,000 range and are nowhere near
standardized. Any hardware you buy will probably be totally obsolete
within a year.
Oh, New Tek does make a VideoToaster for the IBM PC (actually the card
has all the Amiga guts so the PC just serves as an interface), but
buying an Amiga 3000 and getting an Amiga VideoToaster is supposed to
be cheaper. The Amiga camp does have a good standardization and they
have built-in NTSC compatibility, but I think the Mac's and IBM PC's
will trounce them now that they are getting serious about digital
video. The IBM PC is still the cheapest, most flexible platform with
the most software--however, the incompatibility problems are rather
staggering.
> The SB 16-ASP, on the other hand, is very well designed.

Hhm. I've been told the Pro-Audio Spectrum uses the same chipset as
the SB 16-ASP, but the SB 16-ASP is expandable (WaveBlaster module) and
has on-board compression that is missing in the Pro-Audio Spectrum.
The best audio card is produced by Turtle Beach, but the price is
nearly double that of the SB 16-ASP.
>By the way, there's now a competitor for the VB, the Pro-VIDEO
> Spectrum...details unknown.
I don't know much either, except that the Pro-Video Spectrum was
designed from the ground up to work with Video for Windows (and
actually had some effect on the writing of that software) unlike the
VideoBlaster. So I anticipate that it will be able to capture more
frames per second at higher resolutions at about the same price. Also,
this board will function without a feature connector on your SVGA card.
I'm curious about the new ATI Ultra Pro video accelerators. They've
advertised that they've added special decompression hardware to allow
faster playback of Video for Windows. Don't know anything more.
Generally, video accelerators don't do much for pixel-oriented
graphics. Local bus can help though.

Keep me on your mailing list as well. I'd love to see a discussion

Subject: VESA, Video Cards and Hard Disks
i need to buy a couple of VESA bus computers ... i am wondering about
two things ... first video cards ...
the recent PC Mag review of video cards included 5 VL cards, 3 of which
seemed to perform overall mediocre or worse.. does anyone know of a
reliable test suite that can be administered quickly to test a
candidates performance? the low end cards that seem to come standard
with the basic VESA machines are from Genoa and Cirrus... any
experiences with them? so far the few people i know with VESA machines
SWEAR by the video improvements ... but they had been using 2 year old
cards before ... from the PC Mag tests can I conclude that VL cards may
not be faster than comparably priced ISA cards?
second, the hard disk ... will a VL controller out perform a decent ISA
controller ... what if the ISA has hardware caching? with a VESA
machine what will be the weak link on the hard disk chain ... the bus
or the disk? thanks.
